Week Ahead 8 - 14 May

Dear Friends,

Yesterday was set aside for eligible South Africans to exercise their right to vote; their right to determine who and how our country would be run. To guide the country and its citizens is a grave and colossal responsibility. Srila Prabhupada guides leaders with such responsibilty:

“People in general always require a leader who can teach the public by practical behavior. A leader cannot teach the public to stop smoking if he himself smokes. The Srimad-Bhagavatam also affirms that one should follow in the footsteps of great devotees, and that is the way of progress on the path of spiritual realization. The king or the executive head of a state, the father and the school teacher are all considered to be natural leaders of the innocent people in general. All such natural leaders have a great responsibility to their dependents; therefore they must be conversant with standard books of moral and spiritual codes.” (Bhagavad-gita 3.21, purport)

We pray that those who are eventually elected as leaders of this country will have the intelligence and humility to accept the guidance of the revealed scriptures and the great devotees.

As we approach the holy appearance anniversary of Lord Nrsimhadeva, we share with you a meditation on Lord Nrsimhadeva:

“Hiranyakashipu studied the form of the Lord, trying to decide who the form of Nrsimhadeva standing before him was. The Lord’s form was extremely fearsome because of His angry eyes, which resembled molten gold; His shining mane, which expanded the dimensions of His fearful face; His deadly teeth; and His razor-sharp tongue, which moved about like a dueling sword. His ears were erect and motionless, and His nostrils and gaping mouth appeared like caves of a mountain. His jaws parted fearfully, and His entire body touched the sky. His neck was very short and thick, His chest broad, His waist thin, and the hairs on His body as white as the rays of the moon. His arms, which resembled flanks of soldiers, spread in all directions as He killed the demons, rogues and atheists with His conchshell, disc, club, lotus and other natural weapons.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 7.8.19-22)
